(Saturday
20th) Back at work- swamped will show you the pictures later.
(Sunday 13th) I also owe you
pictures from the helicopter ride and the private waterfall bath, as well
as the botanical garden. This will take some time.
(Friday
12th) Still loving paradise - update in a little while! Here are the
pictures - click on the picture for a close-up...

On our way to
explore the island. We're going to drive up to Waimea Canyon. |
 |
On the way, we
saw this HUGE snail. I actually made Leo turn around and we
backtracked so I could take a picture of it. |
 |
Waimea Canyon. My
pictures really does not do nature justice. Looks like a smaller,
greener Grand Canyon. |
 |
And this looks
like part of the set from Jurassic Park (which incidentally was
filmed on Kauai. |
 |
Chickens are like
pigeons in other places. A lot of chickens got free after
hurricane Iniki, and the wild chicken population is now well
established. |
 |
Aunty Lilikoi
(which means Passion fruit in Hawaiian) sells delicious passion
fruit products. Syrups, jams, lotions etc. |
 |
Across the street
from Aunty Lilikoi is this locals lunch place. We had some decent
Thai shrimp here for lunch. |
 |
Wailua falls.
Very pretty - I couldn't capture the real glory of the rainbow
around the fall, you can just see it in the lower right corner. |
 |
On our way from
the Wailua falls lookout, was this beautiful Kodak moment. Just a
gate, but the red soil, green grass and stunning clouds made for a
very pretty picture. |
 |
Of course I can't
go anywhere without finding lampworkers! Here is Andy? (if I
remember your name correctly) working on a boro vessel in his public
studio/shop called the Little Glass Shack. |
 |
The "Jungle
Look" on our way to this little lava pond by the coast. Not a
very difficult hike, but I failed to plan, and ended up having to do
it in sandals with heels. Not a great idea, but I managed. |
 |
Hiking out to
Queens Pond, over rocky black lava. Very dramatic. |
 |
Queens Bath, a
lava pond to swim in next to the ocean. Like a natural pool. |

( Wednesday
10th) Well, well, so this is what paradise is like! Wow! We arrived Monday
afternoon, and I've had a couple of days to decompress, and sightsee a
bit, and now we even got the technology spirits smiling upon us with
Aloha!
Yesterday we drove around the
island (we like to explore and get the "lay of the land")- well,
around is actually not exactly correct, because part of the north western
course does not have roads.
Oops...Be back later - gotta' book
the helicopter ride for tomorrow morning.
(Wednesday 10th-later
) Helicopter rides all booked until Saturday. Ok- I got some
pictures downloaded, we had dinner and some passion fruit daiquiris, and a
beautiful sunset. Here are the pics (click on the pic's for a larger
image.)

Flying in over
Kauai. It is really spectacular from the air. |
 |
Got to the hotel
a short while before sunset, dumped the bags and headed down to the
beach/ pool bar for a couple of refreshing Guava juices- taking in
the scenery. |
 |
Watching the sun
go gown, we started getting hungry. |
 |
And although the
hotel restaurant is hideously expensive, we were too tired to go
anywhere else. The outside seating overlooking the bay was
spectacular -as was the food. |
 |
First morning in
paradise. We got upgraded to an ocean-view room (what a pleasant
surprise!), and this is our view. Wow! |
 |
Went exploring
around the area, and found this Guava plantation. They had a self
guided visitor center and a cute little gift shop- which was, as
everything on Kauai - hm...confiscatorily pricey. |
 |
But, they let us
pick as much Guava as we wanted without charging for it. They even
gave us a bag to carry them in... Strange logic, they should have
charged some for the Guavas. |
 |
They had a nifty
sign with the vital stats...Weather, temperature, tides and of
course Guava harvest. |
 |
We continued
driving around the island. The lava cliffs are very dramatic, this
is on the west coast of Kauai. |
 |
As we kept going,
we decided to drive up to Waimea Canyon. It was completely fogged
in, and we couldn't see squat. But on the way down, we found this
Jurassic Park-like valley... |
 |
Using my EXCELLENT
guidebook "KAUAI Revealed" ( I highly recomment it-they
are available for the other islands as well), we found this little
Japanese/Chinese restaurant on the way home. Decent food and an
adorable setting with this serene Japanese garden right next to the
low tables we had dinner at in the balmy open air. |
| Ok,that's
it today, more about today tomorrow. We have decided to stay around
the hotel, kick back and do some snorkeling. So I'll have
plenty of time to tell you. |
|
|
|
|
Nothing yet (I'm not even there yet!)
But keep your fingers crossed that the technology spirits are smiling!
