If you like it... please |
When we arrived to Culiacan, it was pretty much too dark to see anything, but the driver stopped by this cultural center building where my Father-in-law's name was on the lightboard. This is taken from the car... The 15 minutes of fame! We had to wait for several minutes for all the other announcements to scroll by before we got to this one.
Manuel in rare form at breakfast the next morning!
This
was the view from the back yard of the radio station where he was
interviewed later in the morning. I enjoy seeing glimpses of peoples
ordinary lives...like drying laundry in 108F heat. It must have taken all
of 15 minutes for these sheets to dry!
After the interview, we went to check out the setup of the show. Here's the outside of the Art Museum of Sinaloa, where the exhibit was to be. Culiacan is the state capital of Sinaloa.
And her is a shot of the inside. The building is an ex convent, which they turned into a city administration building, and after it had served out its purpose as such, it became the art museum. The inner courtyard is typical for the Mexican building styles, this one had a roof added to it later. So the ceiling is modern. I love these inner couryards!
Being the (not so closet)-environmentalist that I am, I really enjoy seeing things being re-used before they are recycled. Here recycling wasn't a big thing, but they re-used stuff, just because it made sense. I love this dustpan! And I ended up seeing more of these all around. Cool use of an old oil jug (or whatever it was in it's first life.) Remember, REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!
On the wall facing the staircase leading to the top floor, there was this HUGE ROUND canvas. It must have been at least 5 yards in diameter. It wasn't a mural, but actually a round canvas hung on the wall! It was painted by a Russian artist Vlady that had lived in Mexico for 30 something years.
He passed away just last month. And during the "Day of the Dead" (Halloween) it is customary to make these "altars" honoring the dead. This one was at the museum, made for Vlady. You see a photo of him, some of his paint-brushes, food like bread, fruits and nuts and colorful handmade paper decorations. Very colorful an "Happy" although it was honoring a sad event.
Lunch was at "Los Archos' (the arcs) which was a seafood place. Look at the colors here! They just GLOW! I think you might be seeing some bright beads after this trip!
I ate "Pulpo Veracruz", which was octopus Veracruz style with tomatoes, onions, peppers and olives. Delish! The food looked so good on the dark-blue table cloths and the colorful plates!
After we had eaten and even finished dessert, I realized that I hadn't tried their margaritas (restaurant research you know!)...so we ordered one and all of us tasted it. (Ours is better...but I thought this was a great shot of Manuel!)
Fast forward though the "siesta" after a 2 hour lunch. Here is the show opening. I managed to erase the picture where he actually cuts the ribbon-argghh...but anyway.
Another 15 minutes of fame.
After the show opening we went to...yep, you guessed it...EAT! Dinner at QuinMart. The place had bright orange and yellow walls with dark blue table cloths and trim. Unlikely colors, but very cozy.
Here's where I met Marta, the dynamo lady I spoke about a few days ago who started this restaurant. My new Favorite Lady!
